Student Moves in Liverpool: Tips for Moving Out of Halls and Shared Houses

By the A Man With A Van Liverpool team · 5 minute read

The easiest student move in Liverpool is one you plan two or three weeks before the end of term: book your van early, share it with housemates if you’re all moving at once, clear your room properly so you get your deposit back, and decide in advance where your things will go over summer. Get those four things sorted and moving out of halls or a shared house becomes a couple of hours’ work rather than a stressful last-minute scramble.

Here’s how to do each of them, plus a few things students often forget.

Beat the End of Term Rush

Liverpool has a big student population, and a lot of it lives in the same few places: the halls around the city centre, and the shared terraces around Smithdown Road, Wavertree and Kensington. When tenancies end, thousands of students all want to move in the same couple of weeks, often on the same days.

That means vans get booked up. If you know your moving-out date, book as soon as you can. We recommend booking at least two days ahead at any time of year, but around the end of term earlier really is better. Short notice is often possible, but you’ll have more choice of times if you don’t leave it until the last minute.

A few things worth checking before you book:

  • The exact date and time your tenancy or halls contract ends
  • Whether you need to hand keys back at a certain time
  • When you can get into your new place, if you’re moving straight into another house

Share a Van With Your Housemates

If you live in a shared house and everyone is moving out around the same time, sharing a van can make a lot of sense. One van making several drops can work out simpler than five separate bookings.

To make a shared move work smoothly:

  • Agree a time together. Everyone needs to be packed and ready when the van arrives, not still filling bin bags.
  • Label everything with your name. Five people’s boxes look the same in the back of a van.
  • Send us every drop-off postcode. If one housemate is going to Aigburth, one to the city centre and one back home to Manchester, we need to know all of them to plan the route and price it properly.
  • Sort out how you’re splitting the cost between yourselves before the day, so nobody is arguing on the pavement.

If you’re each going to different parts of the country, separate bookings might suit you better. Ask us and we’ll tell you what makes most sense. Our student moves page has more on how we handle these.

Pack Like You Want to Find Things Again

Most student moves are smaller than a house move, but they’re often packed in a rush. A bit of order saves you time at both ends.

  • Use proper boxes or strong bags. Supermarket carrier bags split on stairs.
  • Keep heavy things like books and textbooks in small boxes so they can be lifted.
  • Bag up bedding and duvets. They’re light and handy for padding other things.
  • Keep your laptop, charger, passport, bank cards and any important documents with you, not in the van.
  • Wrap anything fragile. Our guide to packing fragile items covers mugs, glasses and screens.

Top tip: take photos of your room once it’s empty and clean, before you hand the keys back. If there’s ever a question about your deposit, you’ll have a dated record of the condition you left it in.

Clear Your Room to Protect Your Deposit

Your deposit is often the most valuable thing you’re leaving behind. Landlords and halls usually expect rooms to be left empty and clean, and anything left behind can cause problems.

Before moving day:

  • Check your contract for what’s expected at check-out, such as cleaning and removing your belongings.
  • Empty every drawer, shelf and cupboard, including shared kitchen cupboards and the fridge.
  • Take down posters carefully so you don’t pull paint off the walls.
  • Return anything that belongs to the house, like keys, fobs and any furniture you moved between rooms.
  • Clean as you go. Leaving it all until the last hour after the van has gone is never fun.

If you’ve got old furniture of your own that you don’t want, like a desk chair or a small sofa you bought second-hand, you can have it taken away with our furniture removal service. Please note this is for furniture and household items only, not general waste, so bags of rubbish need to go out with the bins.

Planning Where Your Things Go Over Summer

A lot of students don’t need all their belongings between June and September. Some go home for the summer, some go travelling, and some have a gap between one tenancy ending and the next starting.

We don’t offer storage ourselves, but we can move your things wherever you’ve arranged for them to go. Common options are:

  • Home to your family. We move people from Liverpool to anywhere in the UK, so if home is a long way off, our long distance removals can take your things there.
  • A self-storage unit. If you’ve booked a unit yourself, we can collect from your house or halls and drop everything off there.
  • Straight into next year’s house. If your new tenancy starts soon after the old one ends, you might be able to skip storage altogether.
  • A friend’s spare room. If you’ve only got a few boxes, this is often the cheapest option of all.

Whatever you choose, tell us the addresses when you ask for a quote and we’ll plan the move around it.

Moving Into Halls or a New House

The same tips work in reverse at the start of the year. Halls in the city centre often have set move-in slots and busy loading areas, so check what’s allowed before the day. Shared houses on terraced streets around Smithdown and Wavertree can have very little parking, so it helps to ask a housemate to save a space outside or keep an eye out for the van.

It’s also worth checking how many flights of stairs there are and whether the house has a narrow hallway. Tell us when you book so we can plan for it.

What You Need to Send for a Quote

Getting a price is quick. Send us on WhatsApp:

  • A few photos of your room and anything big, like a desk, bed or bookcase
  • The postcode you’re moving from and every postcode you’re moving to
  • Your preferred date and time
  • Floors, lifts and parking at each end

We usually reply within the hour and agree a clear price with you before you book. Our prices start from £50, and your belongings are fully insured while they’re in our care.
